AUSTRALIAN STOCK WHIPS
All my kangaroo hide stock
whips now have three plaited bellies or if you prefer a small shot bag,
two plaited bellies and the shot bag plus a full kangaroo hide bolster
that is part of the final overlay . The handles are based on a piece
of fibre-glass, built up with tightly wound and glued paper layers until
the desired thickness and shape is achieved and then the overlay is
plaited on.
Which brings us to…
CARE OF WHIPS.
You should use a good quality leather dressing on your whip whenever possible. Be generous especially on the fall, this is the part that works the hardest. Treat your whip well and you can hand it on to your grandchildren. After applying leather dressing a good idea is to lay it in the sun to enable the dressing to penetrate the leather. Don't be tempted to put it near the fire as this will dry the leather too quickly and cause it to crack. We do not recommend using
neatsfoot oil. Avoid working your whip in sand or in gravel. Sand will work its way in between the plaits in the form of a fine grit and will cause damage. Gravel will cut the leather on your whip when it makes contact with the ground.
CAUTION: Take care when cracking your whip, make sure there is no one near you. These whips are not toys and can cause considerable pain. When a whip cracks the tip is travelling at over 1400 feet per second. Faster than the speed of sound and in some cases faster than a speeding bullet. The bang produced by a whip when it cracks is actually the end of the whip breaking the sound barrier. The bang is a mini sonic boom. Should your whip hit anything or anyone when it cracks it is quite capable of cutting flesh and breaking
bones. Be careful!
