My kangaroo
hide bullwhips are handcrafted from the finest quality kangaroo skins
available. Specially hand selected, free from blemishes and tick marks to
give you a handcrafted bullwhip which, with care, will last you a life
time and be handed down through generations. I construct my bullwhips with
4 plaited bellies and for that extra pop a shot belly can be incorporated
into the whip .Please let me know if you want a shot belly or natural
belly when ordering. I start with an 8inch spring steel handle, Over this is then plaited a
four strand kangaroo hide belly,
over this a 6 plait belly is plaited. Next comes another
plaited belly, this time an 8 plait kangaroo belly and once again this is
covered with a final 12 plait belly. Finally over all this is plaited the
final 12 or 16 plait overlay.
Over
the years, 33 in all, of making whips I have found this method of crafting
a bullwhip to be the best, making a strong sturdy whip, which, as I said
before will last you a lifetime if well taken care of and can be handed
down to your children. In the 33 years that I've been in this business
I've repaired a lot of whips and on odd occasions a whip comes through for
some minor repair which can in one such instance a few weeks ago, be 100
years old. A whip that was passed down from father to son but because it
had been really looked after during it's long hard life it was in almost
perfect condition.
TAKING
CARE OF YOUR WHIP
When
you have finished playing or working with your whip at the end of the day
give it a light coat of leather dressing on the fall because this is the part of your whip which works
the hardest and like your popper will eventually wear out so the more care
you give it the longer it will last . The main thong of the whip has
a lot of dressing applied when it is plaited so will not need dressing
for quite awhile unless you notice it is drying out. I light coat every
two or three months should be ample. Speaking of poppers, a lot of
people seem to become very concerned when their popper wears out, that's
what it is supposed to do, it's not a big
deal and if you can learn how to Make your own popper
you'll be
laughing. Use a top quality leather dressing,
DO NOT
use
neatsfoot oil. For all my plaiting I use a product called Jay-ell leather
dressing but that's here in Australia and probably not available overseas,
just use the best quality dressing you can find, your whip will thank you.
CAUTION:
Take care when cracking your
whip, make sure there is no one near you. These whips are not toys and can
cause considerable pain, cut flesh and break bones. When a whip cracks the
tip is traveling at over 1400 feet per second. Faster than the speed of
sound and in some cases faster than a speeding bullet. The bang produced
by a whip when it cracks is actually the end of the whip breaking the
sound barrier. The bang is a mini sonic boom. Should your whip hit
anything or anyone when it cracks it is quite capable of cutting flesh and
breaking bones. Be careful!
